How We Preserve Washington’s Story

We believe history is one of Washington’s greatest public resources—and that every generation deserves free access to the stories that shaped the place they call home.

What We Do

Every community has stories worth preserving, but history is most powerful when people can see it, hear it, and experience it. That’s why we create documentary films that transform historical research into engaging visual stories for audiences of all ages.

Our work includes feature-length documentaries, educational short films, and historical series that explore the people, places, cultures, and defining events of the Pacific Northwest. Working alongside historians, educators, tribal partners, museums, archives, writers, and community organizations, we ensure every story is both historically accurate and deeply engaging.

Unlike many documentary organizations, we create films with education in mind from the very beginning. Our productions are designed to support Washington State history education while remaining engaging for lifelong learners, families, and public audiences. By producing films in both feature-length and short-form formats, educators can easily incorporate individual stories into classrooms, while PBS stations, museums, libraries, and community organizations can share them with broader audiences.

Our completed films are distributed free of charge through public television, Washington State schools, museums, libraries, and digital platforms, creating a permanent educational resource that will continue to inform and inspire future generations. Through every project, we strive to preserve our shared heritage, encourage curiosity, and strengthen the connection between Washington’s past, present, and future.

Our Mission

We believe history has the power to educate, inspire, and connect communities.

Our mission is to preserve the collective memory of the Pacific Northwest by creating engaging documentary films that combine historical accuracy with innovative storytelling. Through partnerships with educators, historians, public television, museums, and community organizations, we make these films freely available to learners and audiences throughout Washington State.

Every story we tell honors the past while helping future generations understand how individuals, cultures, and communities have shaped the place we call home. By preserving these stories today, we ensure they continue to educate and inspire tomorrow.

Our Philosophy

The past is not a collection of dates and facts—it is a living story that continues to shape who we are. We embrace innovative filmmaking while honoring historical accuracy, creating films that educate, inspire, and preserve the collective memory of the Pacific Northwest. That’s why our films are created not only to preserve the past, but to make it freely available for classrooms, communities, and public television—ensuring that the stories of the Pacific Northwest remain accessible for generations to come.
